The Local Woods/Coed Lleol Campaign

‘Restoring links between communities and their woodlands’

Small woods make up more than 80% of our national woodlands, and yet half are unmanaged and most are rarely visited or used by local communities.

A couple of generations ago our woodlands provided communities with dozens of products, from clogs and clothes pegs to hurdles and pea sticks.  Now we buy plastic clothes pegs and train our peas up bamboo canes from China!  We import 95% of our barbeque charcoal from south east Asia, often from threatened mangrove trees, when our local woodlands could provide better charcoal with benefits to the local economy and environment.

Communities have lost their centuries-old understanding of sustainable woodland management, and the benefits that it can bring to the local environment, economy and society.

The Local Woods/Coed Lleol campaign uses publications, events and other activities to help local people reengage with their local woodlands.
