Launching a new outdoor health service in and around the Dyfi Valley

13 Awst 2025

Awyr Iach, a new outdoor health service launches this month offering locals free weekly outdoor activities in and around the Dyfi Valley to boost health and wellbeing for those ages 11 – 100+.

Professionally led activities will include weekly walking and movement sessions for all abilities, as well as 6-week programmes in woodland skills, foraging, arts and crafts and animal therapy and more. Monthly ‘taster’ sessions will run to offer the chance for people to try out different activities.

There will also be the opportunity to take part in drop-in volunteering sessions, learning new skills, staying active and meeting others to help on hands-on outdoor projects, from taking care of the Bro Ddyfi Hospital gardens to local Celtic rainforests.

Locals can sign up to any activity through Elin Crowley, Awyr Iach’s Engagement Officer – in person, or by phone or email. Or you can get a referral to the service from your GP or healthcare provider at Bro Ddyfi Community hospital. All activities will be accessible via public transport, or will have the option of mini bus pick up from Machynlleth.

Dr Sara Bradbury Willis, Dyfi Valley Health GP said – We know that spending time outdoors is great for improving our mental and physical health, and is proven to reduce anxiety, lower blood pressure and increase mobility. Awyr Iach connects local people to the rich landscape of the rural Dyfi Valley they live in, to help improve their health and wellbeing and address identified local challenges such as mental health and mobility.

Awyr Iach brings together the knowledge and skills of local people working to help improve the health and wellbeing of both people and place, from the Hospital and Health board to Outdoor Health Activity Leaders. It is led by Coed Lleol in partnership with Biosffer Dyfi and funded by the National Lottery Community fund for the next 3 years.
