Jenna - From Isolation to Connection

Last spring, Jenna* joined a 6-week programme (Level 1 Agored in Exploring Craft Resources and Techniques) in her local area. She had moved to Wales for a more peaceful life after going through cancer treatment. Having worked as a social worker for 20 years, Jenna felt isolated in her new rural home, especially with her partner often away for work.

“I was feeling a lot of grief. I had left several long-term friends behind, and I didn’t realise how important human contact was until I moved to Wales,” she shared. “I was in quite a dark place, with no purpose.”

Through a social prescriber, Jenna was referred to activities in her local area and it was through new friends and connections that she heard about us. Coed Lleol’s sessions quickly became an essential part of her weekly routine.

“The sessions helped give structure to my week and supported my mental wellbeing. I made new connections with people I’m still in touch with, and it was lovely to meet others with similar interests,” Jenna said.

The sessions included a variety of hands-on activities, from foraging to woodland skills. Jenna particularly enjoyed learning to make syrups, vinegars, balms, and crafting art materials like charcoal and pastels from plants. These creative sessions were a highlight.

“There was always something new to learn. The activities were great, and I loved being outside in nature. The foraging walks and making things from plants was such a rewarding experience.”

What Jenna valued most was the chance to connect with others. The sense of belonging and shared interest made a significant impact on her.

“What I valued most about the sessions was meeting people and feeling part of a group. I’ve found my tribe—people I have a lot in common with. I’ve made friendships that have continued after the sessions.”

Since completing the programme, Jenna has continued to seek out more opportunities to connect with nature. The experience has given her a new sense of purpose and has had a lasting effect on her mental health.

“I’m consciously seeking ways to do more outdoor activities. The impact on my wellbeing has been huge.”

Coed Lleol’s woodland wellbeing programmes are designed to help individuals improve mental and physical health through outdoor activities, skill-building, and connection with others. Jenna’s story shows how time in nature, along with supportive community, can lead to lasting positive change.
