GROWING TOGETHER

Sailing through the summer holidays with woodland wellbeing

22 Aug 2022

This summer, Coed Lleol Swansea have been working with Pobl, The Environment Centre and Blaen Y Maes Drop-in Centre to provide family woodland activities  for those in the Penderi area of Swansea.

Penderi is a community on the edge of the city centre, situated amongst valuable natural resources including common land and a historic woodland with rich biodiversity which is an important part of creating wellbeing for the future with the community. Pobl Housing Association are delivering the Green Regeneration Project in the this area (Portmead, Blaen-Y Maes and Cadle) and aim to transform the lives of people living there, with initiatives including the regeneration of its green spaces and supporting environmentally friendly activities and businesses.

We delivered 6 weekly sessions at Cadle Croft, an idyllic clearing at the bottom end of Penllergare Woods. The clearing, which is right next to the river, is a fantastic location and easily accessible from the surrounding communities. We carried out a taster session at the drop-in center and a volunteer session before the main programme got underway with a litter pick and some site clearing with our Woodland Management officer Anna Stickland. Stuart and Emma led three sessions each, engaging children of various ages in activities such as fire lighting, charcoal painting, bug hunting and face painting.
