Barry and Bev are the current custodians of 6 1/2 acres of ancient semi-natural deciduous woodland in Hampshire. Part of the larger Lower Court Wood, it gets its name from the Elf Cup fungus that brightens the woodland floor in winter. Historically it had been coppiced for fuel to supply local brickworks, but from the 1940’s to its purchase in 2014 appears to have remained unmanaged – leaving a wealth of deadwood, falling trees and fungi. An initial survey identified 18 different tree species and a myriad of other species including over 38 species of birds, 140 species of fungi (so far!) and a broad range of mammals.

With an approved management plan in place Barry and Bev have been reinstating the coppice over about one third of the wood, significantly thinning the birches on another and carrying out some selective felling to open specific areas in the other third. They have also restored ponds and improved access.
