If you are interested in attracting more birds and other wildlife to your wood then this event is a fantastic opportunity. Nick Lear has been managing this 75-acre wood for forty years, learning as he went along with various coppice techniques. Knowlands is an ancient coppice broadleaf wood with wonderful wide rides and open spaces alive with birdsong. There is much hornbeam and oak, along with birch, quaking aspen and a diverse array of other native species.

Nick is always happy to talk about the wood and its wildlife (birds, butterflies, bees, bluebells and beasts) and the management which encourages their presence. The wood never looks and sounds better than in mid-April, with a colourful display of wood anemone and ancient woodland plants, with chiffchaffs and blackcaps adding their song to the resident blackbirds and robins. Maybe even an early nightingale.

You are welcome to bring a packed lunch to stay and enjoy in the woodland at the end of the walk.
