Spoon carving is a great way to start carving and to learn about the properties of wood. Each spoon is completely unique and they make great presents.

This course will help beginners get started and those wanting to progress their technique further and try out more advanced designs. Spend the morning learning how to use a sloyd knife and a range of carving techniques to carve your own spatula or spreader. After lunch, we will progress to spoons – incorporating basic axe work and a spoon knife to carve your own cooking spoon, so that you will complete the day with at least two new kitchen utensils to take home!

You will learn

  •    Tool selection and sharpening
  •    Wood selection
  •    Splitting and roughing out
  •    Carving and shaping
  •    Finishing and protecting

You tutor will be Tom Dillon. Tom has been a green woodworker for over ten years, starting out as Mike Abbott’s chairmaking assistant in 2011. Since then he has been involved in woodland management and round wood timber framing projects and has worked teaching green wood crafts for a Special Education College for young adults.

Our experience:

Small Woods use only experienced professionals and woodland practitioners as tutors. We have more than 20 years’ experience of delivering courses and training and a reputation for high quality teaching and professionalism.

Small Woods courses are suitable for all levels of experience and ability and we keep course numbers low. The physical nature and/or woodland location of some courses may make them difficult for people with mobility problems. We do, however, have many years’ experience in enabling all groups to attend courses and will make every effort to ensure a satisfying experience for all.

Covid-19 and Courses

The Green Wood Centre has worked tirelessly to ensure that staff & visitors are entering a COVID safe environment. SWA have a duty of care to participants, staff, trainees, volunteers, etc. We ask that all tutors and participants respect the measures stated regardless of their personal views, there will be an induction by your course tutor on arrival.

In the event that a course has to be cancelled due to Covid-19, a full refund will be provided and we will suggest keeping an eye on the website and re-booking once the course has become available again.
